How to Set a Work Center Effective Date in EDGEBIC

To set a work center effective date in EDGEBIC by User Solutions, open the work center for editing on the Workcenter tab and fill in the Effective Date field on the Basic Information tab. The scheduler treats the work center as unavailable before that date. The record exists from the moment you save it, so routings, groups, and reports can all reference the machine immediately. Only its capacity waits.

This is the field that lets you model a machine you have ordered but not yet installed. Without it, you have two bad options: create the work center now and watch the scheduler book work on equipment that does not exist, or delay all the master data work until the machine is on the floor and everyone is in a hurry.

Before You Start

  • Know the date you will run production parts on the machine, not the delivery date. Uncrating, leveling, power, and first-article qualification usually take a week or more after the truck arrives.

  • Have at least one shift ready. An effective date controls when capacity starts. Shifts control how much there is. A machine with no shift has zero hours on every date, effective or not.

Step 1: Open the Work Center for Editing

Open the Workcenter tab from the main navigation to reach the Work Center Management page. If the machine does not exist yet, click Add Work Center and create it first (how to add a work center covers the three fields that matter). If it already exists, click the pencil Edit button in its Actions column.

The Work Center Configuration dialog opens on the Basic Information tab.

Step 2: Fill In the Effective Date

Effective Date sits on the Basic Information tab alongside Is Available, No.Instances, and Setup Time (hrs). Enter the first date the machine will genuinely produce.

Leave every other field configured as though the machine were already running. Set No.Instances to the real machine count, pick the Cost per Hour you will charge, choose the Gantt colors, and decide whether it follows the plant calendar or gets its own. None of that is affected by the effective date. You are describing the machine as it will be, and dating when the description starts counting.

Step 3: Save and Confirm

Click Save. The work center appears in the grid like any other, with its instance count, its Shift Calendar badge, and its flags. Nothing in the grid announces the effective date, which is worth remembering when a colleague asks why a perfectly normal looking work center has no bars on it.

What Changes When You Save

Nothing moves. Saving master data never reschedules anything in EDGEBIC. The effect appears on the next Drive Schedule run, and it is a clean one: the scheduler skips the work center entirely for any date before the effective date.

That skip behaves exactly like an unavailable work center. For any routing step pointed at the machine, the run does one of two things:

Both outcomes are correct. The first keeps the job moving on equipment you actually own. The second tells you plainly that this job depends on a machine that is not here yet, which is exactly the sort of thing a plan should say out loud.

On and after the effective date, nothing special happens at all. The work center offers shift hours x instances like every other resource, and the next scheduling run fills it. There is no switch to flip and no reminder to action.

How to Check It Worked

  1. Run Drive Schedule and open the Resource Calendar for a date range that straddles the effective date.
  2. Read the Total Capacity row for the new work center. It should read zero on every day before the date and its normal shift hours from the date onward.
  3. Spot check a job whose routing uses the machine. Its operation should start on or after the effective date.

A Short Worked Sequence

A second press arrives in six weeks and will run production parts from the first Monday of the month after that.

  1. Create the work center now. Give it the real No.Instances, the shifts it will work, its Cost per Hour, and its Gantt colors, exactly as though it were on the floor.
  2. Set Effective Date to that first Monday. Not the delivery date, and not the date the electrician is booked.
  3. Write the routings this week. Point the steps that will move to the new press at it, and give each of those steps an alternate work center so today's jobs still have somewhere to run.
  4. Run Drive Schedule. Nothing lands on the press. Jobs continue on the alternates, and the plan reads exactly as it did before you created anything.
  5. Do nothing on the Monday. The scheduler starts offering the press its shift hours on that date. Reschedule when you want work to move onto it, and watch the alternates' load drop.

The work happened six weeks early, in calm conditions, and the plan was never wrong in the meantime.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the delivery date. The machine is not capacity when it lands on the dock. Use the first day it can run parts.
  • Forgetting the machine is invisible until then. Planners see a normal grid row and wonder why nothing is scheduled on it. Put the reason in the Description field so the next person does not have to guess.
  • Setting an effective date instead of unticking Is Available. They produce the same symptom for different reasons. Use Effective Date for a machine that is coming, and Is Available for one that is out of service with no fixed return.
  • Expecting the plan to redraw itself on the date. Capacity becomes available, but existing schedules keep their dates until the next run. Reschedule when you want the new machine used.
  • Leaving a stale date behind. Once the date passes it does nothing, but clearing it keeps the record readable.

A: No, that is the scheduler telling you the truth. Before the effective date the work center is skipped entirely, so any step routed to it has to wait for the date or find another machine. If the job should not wait, give that step an alternate work center so the scheduler has somewhere else to go, or move the effective date earlier if the machine is genuinely available sooner.
