Best Scheduling Software for Multi-Shift Manufacturing Operations
The best software for optimising multi-shift factory schedules is a finite-capacity scheduler with per-work-centre shift calendars, cross-midnight handling and labour skills: EDGEBIC (one-time license, 5-day implementation), PlanetTogether and Siemens Opcenter APS (enterprise APS), Asprova for high-mix plants, and Epicor Advanced MES for Kinetic sites. Netronic, MRPeasy and Just Plan It suit smaller two-shift shops. This page compares eight tools for factories in North America, the UK and Europe.
By User Solutions, Inc. Updated 28 August 2026. Reviewed against vendor documentation and our own scheduling implementation experience since 1991.
Multi-shift factories break simple schedulers in predictable ways. A 14-hour job is shown finishing inside an 8-hour day. A night shift that crosses midnight logs its hours on the wrong date. A work centre that runs two shifts is loaded as if it runs three. A job is booked onto a shift where nobody with the right skill is on. Optimising a multi-shift schedule means the tool understands capacity per work centre, per shift, per day, and allocates hours across shifts without a planner doing arithmetic.
The tools below are grouped by how deep that shift model goes. Finite-capacity schedulers (EDGEBIC, PlanetTogether, Siemens Opcenter APS, Asprova, Epicor Advanced MES) model shift patterns, holidays, downtime and labour constraints and optimise sequence across them. Lighter Gantt and cloud MRP tools (Netronic, MRPeasy, Just Plan It) support shift calendars but with simpler allocation and fewer optimisation rules.
User Solutions builds EDGEBIC, so our entry is not neutral. Competitor descriptions are conservative; no prices are quoted unless the vendor publishes them.
How we built this shortlist
- Shift calendars are defined per work centre, with holidays and planned downtime
- A single operation can span shifts and cross midnight without manual splitting
- Labour, operator skills and machine instances are constraints, not just notes
- The schedule can be re-optimised after a mid-shift disruption
- Integrates with the ERP the factory already runs, and serves US, UK and EU sites
The shortlist
1. User Solutions, Inc. (USA)
EDGEBIC
Finite-capacity scheduling with per-work-centre shift designs, holidays, downtime, machine instances and operator skills. Hours are allocated across shifts automatically, cross-midnight shifts are logged on the correct day, and a booking outside shift hours is flagged. Adding a second shift on a bottleneck is a what-if scenario, not a rebuild. Companion kiosk app for operator time tracking.
- Best for
- 10 to 500+ employees; 1 to 3 shifts, 5 to 7 days
- Pricing
- One-time perpetual license, published: $25,000 APS edition, $35,000 Complete edition
2. PlanetTogether (USA)
PlanetTogether APS
Enterprise APS with detailed resource calendars, shift patterns and optimisation rules across multiple plants. Strong for process and packaging plants running 24/7 with campaign and changeover constraints. Sized for mid-market and enterprise budgets.
- Best for
- Mid-market to enterprise; multi-plant, 24/7
- Pricing
- Subscription; quote-based
3. Siemens Digital Industries Software
Siemens Opcenter APS (Preactor)
Mature shift and calendar modelling from the Preactor lineage, with advanced sequencing rules and integration into Siemens Opcenter MES for shop-floor execution. Partner-implemented; typical for larger plants already on Siemens.
- Best for
- Mid-market to enterprise
- Pricing
- Quote-based through Siemens and partners
4. Epicor Software (USA)
Epicor Advanced MES and Kinetic Scheduling
For plants on Epicor Kinetic, native scheduling plus Advanced MES gives shift-level execution data (machine monitoring, operator logins) alongside the schedule. Shift modelling is adequate; sites with complex skills or cross-midnight patterns often add a dedicated scheduler.
- Best for
- Mid-market to enterprise Epicor customers
- Pricing
- Subscription modules; quote-based
5. Asprova Corporation (Japan)
Asprova APS
Very fast engine with granular shift, resource and skill constraints, widely used in automotive and electronics plants running three shifts. Configured by certified partners; strongest where the rule set is complex and data is clean.
- Best for
- Mid-market to enterprise; high-mix, 3 shifts
- Pricing
- Quote-based license through partners
6. NETRONIC Software (Germany)
Netronic Visual Advanced Production Scheduler
Finite-capacity Gantt inside Dynamics 365 Business Central using Business Central shop calendars for shifts. Good for two-shift Business Central shops; optimisation rules are simpler than a standalone APS.
- Best for
- Small to mid-market Business Central customers
- Pricing
- Subscription; listed on Microsoft AppSource
7. MRPeasy (Estonia)
MRPeasy
Cloud MRP with work-station calendars and shift definitions for its production planner. Suitable for small shops running one or two shifts with straightforward routings; not an optimiser.
- Best for
- 10 to 200 employees; 1 to 2 shifts
- Pricing
- Published per-user monthly subscription
8. NETRONIC Software (Germany)
Just Plan It
Cloud Gantt scheduler for small job shops with resource working-time calendars. Handles a second shift, but with limited constraint checking and no labour-skill modelling.
- Best for
- 5 to 50 employees; 1 to 2 shifts
- Pricing
- Published monthly subscription

How to choose
Test a cross-midnight job in the demo
Give each vendor a 14-hour operation on a work centre that runs 06:00 to 22:00 in two shifts, and a night shift that crosses midnight. Watch whether the tool splits the hours correctly and logs them on the right day. This single test eliminates most weak schedulers.
Model labour, not just machines
On multi-shift floors the binding constraint is often the skilled operator on nights, not the machine. Choose a tool where operator skills and headcount per shift are scheduling constraints (EDGEBIC, PlanetTogether, Opcenter, Asprova).
Ask how a mid-shift disruption is handled
A machine goes down at 02:00. Can the night supervisor reschedule from the floor, and does the tool show which deliveries move? Shop-floor kiosks or MES links matter here.
Check the second-shift what-if
The most common multi-shift decision is whether adding a shift on the bottleneck pays. The tool should answer with a dated scenario, not a spreadsheet.
Size the tool to the plant
Two-shift shops under 50 people can run on Netronic, MRPeasy or Just Plan It. Three-shift plants, or any plant with skills and setup sequencing, need a finite-capacity scheduler. Enterprise APS makes sense above a few hundred employees or multiple plants.
Confirm support across time zones
Night shifts need support that is not only 9 to 5 in one time zone. Ask about coverage for UK and CET hours if you run European plants. User Solutions supports UK and EU customers remotely from the US, with GBP or EUR equivalents on request.
