How to Read the Work Center Capacity Detail Grid in EDGEBIC
The Work Center Capacity Detail grid on the EDGEBIC by User Solutions dashboard puts every station's total, assigned and available hours in one table, with a utilization percentage and a status beside them. The chart above it shows you the shape of the plant. This is where you read the actual numbers.

Before You Start
- Jobs are scheduled, because assigned hours come from the plan.
- Work centers carry shifts and calendars, because total capacity is shift hours multiplied by instances. A wrong calendar paints a wrong picture with great confidence.
- Work centers are assigned to departments if you want the Department Summary strip to mean anything.
Step 1: Open the Capacity Sub-Tab
Open Dashboard, stay on the CAPACITY tab, and switch to the Capacity sub-tab. Click Refresh now first if the board has been open for a while, since the cockpit does not refresh in the background.
Step 2: Read the Columns as a Set

No column on this grid means much alone. Utilization at 92% is comfortable on a station with slack after it and alarming on the constraint. Available hours of 30 are useless if they all fall after the due date. Read total, assigned and available together, then look at the percentage last.
Step 3: Use the Department Summary Strip
Beside the grid, the Department Summary rolls the same numbers up by department. Use it to answer the question a plant manager actually asks, which is rarely about one machine: is the load balanced across the shop, or is one department carrying everything while another idles?
A department at 40% next to a department at 95% is either a routing question, because work could run in more places than it does, or a staffing question. Neither is visible one row at a time.
Step 4: Confirm the Number in the Authoritative Report
The dashboard is the glanceable layer. For capacity specifically, the 📊 Work Center Utilization report is the authority, because its available hours are computed from the real shift calendars and any per-day overrides, and it rates every station on published bands.

Step 5: Act on a Row
Two actions start from this grid.
The capacity is wrong. Double-click the work center's row. The per-day capacity dialog opens for that station, showing a day grid with the shift default, the capacity, the loaded hours, whether the day is overridden, and a reason, plus counters for total capacity, loaded, free, over capacity and overridden days. The load is wrong. Find out who is on the station before you move anything. In Schedule, open the Resource Calendar and click the station's assigned hours cell for the period to open the Job Detail list: how to see which jobs are behind a capacity number.
A Worked Example
A planner opens the Capacity sub-tab on a Monday. One row stands out: a mill with two instances shows 96 total hours, 92 assigned, 4 available and 96% utilization, while the bench beside it shows 40 total, 12 assigned and 30% utilization.
The first instinct is to move work from the mill to the bench. The grid alone does not support that decision, so the planner takes two more steps.
First, the Resource Calendar. Clicking the mill's assigned hours cell for the week lists the jobs behind the 92 hours: one large order carrying 45 of them, and four smaller ones. Second, the routings. Only one of the five jobs can physically run on the bench, and it is worth 8 hours.
So the real answer is 8 hours of relief, not 52. That is still enough to clear the week, and it took four minutes to establish. Without the drill-down, the same planner would have promised a rebalance the shop could not deliver.
What Changes When You Read It
Nothing, unless you use the per-day override. Saving an override changes that station's capacity on those dates and the dashboards reflect it immediately, but already-scheduled jobs do not move until you re-run the schedule. Everything else on the grid is read-only.
How to Check It Worked
After an override and a scheduling run, click Refresh now and read the same row. Total hours should reflect the new capacity, and utilization should have fallen if the load stayed the same. If the row is unchanged, either the dialog was closed without saving or the schedule was not re-run.
Common Mistakes
- Ignoring the instance count. A three-instance station's totals describe three machines, not one.
- Reading period totals as day-level truth. Free hours later in the week do not help work due earlier in it.
- Quoting the dashboard percentage in a meeting. Use the utilization report, which computes available hours from the calendars and states the rating band it used.
- Inflating capacity to clear a red row. The per-day override exists for calendar truth such as maintenance or agreed overtime, not for making an overload look tidy.
- Leaving work centers without a department. The Department Summary and the executive rollup both skip them, and the gap is silent.

Q: The grid shows a station at 96% and the utilization report calls the same station GOOD. Which one do I quote?
A: Quote the report, and understand why they differ. The dashboard grid is a snapshot for the period the cockpit is showing, while the Work Center Utilization report averages the window you set in its date range dialog and rates the result on published bands: above 100% is CRITICAL, 85 to 100% is HIGH, 60 to 85% is GOOD, 30 to 60% is LOW and below 30% is IDLE. A station can be at 96% this week and average 78% over the month, and both numbers are correct. For anything you put in front of a manager or a customer, use the report, because its available hours come from the real shift calendars and any per-day overrides.
Q: One row shows plenty of available hours but the shop says that machine is jammed. What is going on?
A: Look at the instance count first. A work center with three instances shows the total of all three, so one machine can be solidly booked while the row still reports free hours. Then look at the period: a week with 30 free hours can still be impossible if 28 of them fall on Friday and the work is due Wednesday. The grid is a period total, not a schedule. Drill in from the Resource Calendar by clicking the station's assigned hours cell for the specific day, which lists the jobs behind the number and usually settles the argument in one screen.
