How to See Which Jobs Are Behind a Capacity Number in EDGEBIC

Every capacity number in EDGEBIC by User Solutions is clickable: click an assigned hours or backlog cell in the Resource Calendar and a Job Detail dialog lists the exact jobs, shifts, dates, and hours that add up to it. A red day tells you there is a problem. This tells you whose problem it is, which is the part you can act on.

Before You Start

  • Jobs are scheduled. Every figure in the Resource Calendar is derived from the plan, so an unscheduled shop shows empty cells.
  • Work centers carry shifts and calendars, because capacity comes from the real shift calendars and any per-day overrides.
  • You know which question you are asking. Assigned hours and backlog are different numbers and drill into different job lists.

Step 1: Open the Resource Calendar

Open the Schedule area and select the Resource Calendar tab. It is a grid of work centers against time periods, and it is read-only: nothing you click here changes a plan.

Step 2: Set the Lens

The controls across the top decide what each cell means.

Start with Mode set to All and View set to Week. That gives you total capacity, hours assigned, available capacity, backlog, and utilization for every station in one screen.

Step 3: Click the Number

Click a Hours Assigned or Backlog cell that holds a non-zero value. The Job Detail dialog opens, headed with the work center and the period you clicked, and lists one row per allocation:

The transaction hours add up to the cell you clicked, under the same Shift Filter and Job settings that were active on the grid.

Step 4: Read Assigned Against Backlog

The two cells answer different questions and the difference decides your response.

Hours Assigned is what lands in this period. It is the number to click when someone asks what the station is doing on Tuesday.

Backlog is how much work is still ahead of the station as of this period. It is a forward sum of remaining allocation hours, so a step with 24 hours spread over three days reads 24, then 16, then 8, then 0 rather than repeating 24 until it is finished. A backlog that grows week over week means work is arriving faster than the station clears it, which is the earliest warning you get.

Step 5: Turn the List Into a Decision

Read the job list and pick the cheapest fix:

  1. The capacity is wrong. Maintenance finished early or overtime was agreed. Double-click the Total Capacity cell for that day to open the per-day capacity dialog and set the day's hours with a reason. See how to override capacity for one day.
  2. The load is wrong. One job on the list has slack. Move it on the Gantt, or let the optimizer propose a better ordering.
  3. Neither. The station is genuinely short of hours, and that is a capacity conversation rather than a scheduling one.

What Changes When You Click

Nothing. Opening the calendar, switching modes, and drilling into a cell are all read-only. Only the per-day capacity dialog reached by double-clicking a Total Capacity cell writes anything, and even then already-scheduled jobs stay where they are until the next scheduling run re-plans against the new hours.

How to Check It Worked

After you act and re-run the scheduler, click the same cell again. The Job Detail list should have changed composition: the job you moved is gone from that period, or the hours are spread differently across the instances. If the list is identical, the change you made did not reach the plan, which usually means the scheduler was not re-run.

Common Mistakes

  • Clicking a zero cell and concluding the drill-down is broken. There is nothing behind an empty number.
  • Comparing a filtered cell against an unfiltered expectation. The dialog honors the calendar's Shift Filter and Job filter, so clear them before you audit a total.
  • Reading backlog as a workload for the week. It is the queue ahead of the station, not the hours planned inside the period.

Q: The heatmap shows one mill red next Tuesday. How do I get from that to a decision in two minutes?

A: Open the Resource Calendar, set Mode to All and View to Day, and click that mill's Hours Assigned cell for Tuesday. The Job Detail list names the jobs sitting on the day with their hours, so you can see at a glance whether it is one large job or five small ones, and whether any of them belongs to a customer with slack. From there the fix picks itself: if the capacity number is wrong because overtime was agreed, double-click the Total Capacity cell and set the day's capacity with a reason. If the load is wrong, move the least urgent job on the Gantt. Then re-run the scheduler and click the same cell again to confirm the composition changed.

Q: Backlog on one station keeps growing week over week even though assigned hours look normal. What does that mean?

A: Assigned answers what lands in a period. Backlog answers how much work is still ahead of the station as of that period, so it is the forward sum of remaining allocation hours and it burns down as work is consumed. A station reading 24, 16, 8, then 0 across four days is normal. A station whose weekly backlog reads 120, 148, 176 is receiving work faster than it clears it, which is an early warning of lateness weeks before any due date is missed. Click the backlog cell for each week and compare the job lists: if the same jobs keep reappearing further out, they are not being worked, and no amount of resequencing will fix a station that is genuinely short of hours.
