- What Is an Alternative Work Center Category?
An alternative work center category is the top-level setting that says how a second work center attached to a routing step is used: parallel means it runs alongside the primary, and true alternative means it replaces the primary when it can finish sooner. These are the only two values, and they produce opposite schedules from the same list of machines. How it works
A routing step names a primary work center. Real plants rarely have exactly one machine that can do a given operation, so the step can carry additional work centers. The question the scheduler has to answer is what those additional entries mean, and there are only two sensible answers.
Parallel means simultaneous use. The alternative work center runs at the same time as the primary, and the step is finished by the combination of them. This is the older model in the product, and it covers the cases where the physical operation genuinely needs more than one machine or where a batch is deliberately split across two lines that both run.
True alternative means substitution. The alternative is a capacity-aware fallback that takes the place of the primary when it can complete the operation earlier. Before the schedule is built, the candidates are compared against real calendars and real existing load, and the one that produces the earliest completion is the one that gets booked. Only one machine carries the operation.
The distinction is not cosmetic. Under parallel, both machines consume capacity for that job during the same window, and the step gets shorter. Under true alternative, exactly one machine consumes capacity, the step takes as long as that machine needs, and the benefit shows up as an earlier start rather than a shorter run.
Because the two behaviors are handled by different parts of the engine, the category is the switch that routes the entry to the right one. A routing import carries the same decision in its alternate type column, which splits the parallel case further into dependent and independent. Getting it wrong does not produce an error. It produces a schedule that is internally consistent and describes something your plant does not do.
A concrete example
Think of two people carrying a sofa versus two people who can each carry a box. Two people on one sofa is parallel: the sofa physically requires both of them, they move at the same time, and the job is done when the pair is done. Two people who can each carry the box is a true alternative: only one of them will actually pick it up, and the sensible answer is whichever one is free first.
Now put that in a plant. A frame that needs three drill heads working in sync is parallel. All three heads run during the same window, the operation finishes when the group finishes, and removing one of them does not just slow the job down, it makes the operation impossible as configured.
Mill-2 standing in for Mill-1 is a true alternative. A four hour milling operation is scheduled. Mill-1 is fully booked until Thursday. Mill-2 is open Tuesday morning. Under true alternative, the scheduler compares the two candidates, sees that Mill-2 completes the operation two days earlier, and books Mill-2. Mill-1 is untouched. The step still takes four hours, it just happens sooner.
Set the same Mill-2 entry to parallel by mistake and you get a very different plan: two hours of milling on Mill-1 and two hours on Mill-2 during the same window, with both machines committed to one job. On paper the operation looks twice as fast. On the floor, one part cannot be in two mills.

Q: We added Mill-2 as an alternative to Mill-1 and now every job seems to be booked on both machines at once. What did we set wrong?
A: You almost certainly left the category as parallel when you meant true alternative. Parallel is the older of the two behaviors and it means exactly what you are seeing: both work centers are engaged on the same step at the same time, which is correct for a synchronized pair of heads on one part and wrong for a spare mill you wanted as a fallback. Change the entry's category to true alternative and re-run the schedule. Mill-2 will then be evaluated as a substitute for Mill-1 rather than an addition to it, and only one of the two will carry the operation.
Q: How do we decide which category a second machine should have?
A: Ask what physically happens on the shop floor when the job runs. If both machines have their hands on the same workpiece during the same window, whether that is two drill heads on one frame or two lines splitting a batch, the category is parallel. If exactly one machine will do the work and you are naming a backup for when the first is busy or down, the category is true alternative. The test is the count of machines actually turning during the operation. One means true alternative, more than one means parallel.
