  • The delta note, a brief change summary such as "35 ops moved off plan", which turns a fallen number into a starting point for investigation.
  • The data quality chip, one of Live, Plan, Estimate or Offline, declaring the provenance of the value.
  • The explanation, the full formula and source description, reachable from the question mark on the tile.

The chip and the explanation are the two that separate a dashboard from a poster. Live means a persisted real event, such as a count of open orders. Plan means a projection from the schedule that firms up as actuals arrive. Estimate means a heuristic. Offline means the formula is correct but the source data does not exist yet, and in that case the tile shows a dash. That last behavior is a deliberate choice: a plausible zero would be read as a real zero and quietly poison every decision downstream, while a dash is unmistakably a statement about the data.

A Concrete Example

Take the schedule adherence tile on the planner view during a rough fortnight.

Over the 14 day window, 120 operations were scheduled to start. Eighty-five started within an hour of plan and 35 have no logged actual start at all. Adherence is 85 divided by 120, or 70.8 percent.

Everything a planner needs to act sits in one square. The value says there is a problem. The target says how big. The sparkline says whether it arrived this morning or has been building. The delta note names the 35 operations to look at first. The chip warns that a missing kiosk entry and a genuinely late start are indistinguishable in the arithmetic, so the first move is to confirm the actuals exist. None of that requires opening a second screen.

Tiles are the building block of the dashboard cockpit, which arranges them into audience-specific tabs: an executive view, a planner view, and a standup board sized for a wall-mounted screen. Each tab loads a snapshot rather than streaming, so after a schedule run you refresh to see the new picture.

Two behaviors are worth knowing:

  • Tiles can be shown or hidden. A board displayed to the floor every morning is usually better without permanently dashed Offline tiles, because a standing dash trains people to skip the whole row.
