How to Delete a Work Center in EDGEBIC (and Why It Sometimes Refuses)

To delete a work center in EDGEBIC by User Solutions, open the Workcenter tab and click the trash button in the machine's Actions column, or tick several rows and use Delete Selected. The delete is blocked while any active routing, schedule, or capacity override still references the work center. That guard is the interesting part of this task. The click itself takes a second; clearing the references is the real work.

Most of the time you should not delete at all. A work center is referenced by every routing step that uses it, every scheduled operation ever placed on it, every cost figure rolled up from those operations, and every capacity override typed against it. Deleting throws that context away. Deactivating keeps it and produces the same effect on the plan.

Before You Start

  • Decide whether delete is really what you want. Delete is for records created in error. Deactivate is for machines that are genuinely retired but have history.
  • Know what references the machine. Routing steps are the common blocker, but schedules and per-day capacity overrides count too.
  • Have a replacement in mind if routings need repointing. Steps have to go somewhere.

Step 1: Open the Work Center Management Grid

Open the Workcenter tab from the main navigation. The Work Center Management page lists every machine with its WC Id, Work Center Name, Instances, Shift Calendar badge, flags, and an Actions column holding Edit, Per-day capacity, the setup matrix button, and Remove.

Step 2: Try the Delete

For one machine, click the trash Remove button in its row and confirm. For several, tick the rows and click Delete Selected.

If nothing references the work center, it disappears from the grid and you are done. If something does, the delete is refused with an in-use error naming the problem. That is not a failure to work around. It is the system protecting your routings from steps that point at nothing.

Step 3: Clear the References

Work through the three reference types in this order, because each one is cheaper to check than the last.

Routing steps. Open the BOR tab and find every routing with a step pointed at the machine. Repoint each step at the replacement work center, or delete the step if the operation is genuinely gone, then save the routing. If several routings share the same substitution, consider whether the two machines should have been a pool all along, which how to create a work center group covers.

Schedules. Operations already planned on the machine hold a reference. Clear or reschedule the affected jobs so nothing remains booked there. Jobs with recorded actuals on the machine are the strongest signal that you want deactivation instead: that work physically happened on that station and the record should say so.

Capacity overrides. Open the machine's per-day capacity dialog with the chart button on its row and click Reset on every row showing Overridden. An override you typed during a trial run is easy to forget and just as capable of blocking the delete.

Step 4: Delete, or Change Your Mind

Retry the delete. With every reference cleared it completes.

If clearing the references turns out to be more disruptive than you expected, stop and deactivate instead. Open the work center for editing and untick Is Available on the Basic Information tab. From the next scheduling run the machine is skipped entirely, jobs re-route to configured alternates or slide, and the grid row stays available for reading history.

Neither path reschedules anything by itself. Master data edits never move a live plan in EDGEBIC. Run Drive Schedule when you want the plan rebuilt against the change, and review the result before you communicate any new dates.

How to Check It Worked

  1. The work center is gone from the Work Center Management grid, or shows as unavailable if you deactivated it.
  2. Open the BOR tab and confirm no routing step still names it. A step pointing at a machine that is skipped will not schedule.
  3. Run Drive Schedule and read the result. Jobs that used to run on the machine should now sit on their replacement, and the run should report no unscheduled operations.
  4. Check the Resource Calendar for the replacement machine. Its load should have gone up by roughly what the old machine was carrying.

A Short Worked Sequence

Three work centers were created during a trial: TEST-1, TEST-2, and TEST-3. Two delete cleanly and one refuses.

  1. Tick all three and click Delete Selected. TEST-1 and TEST-2 go. TEST-3 is refused with an in-use error.
  2. Check routings first. Open the BOR tab. A throwaway routing from the trial still has a step pointed at TEST-3. Delete that routing, or repoint the step.
  3. Check schedules next. A job was scheduled during the trial and still holds an operation on TEST-3. Clear that job's schedule.
  4. Check overrides last. Open TEST-3's per-day capacity dialog. Two days show Overridden from an experiment. Click Reset on each.
  5. Retry the delete. It completes.

Every one of those three checks is quicker than the last, which is why the order matters. And if step 2 had turned up a routing you actually use, the correct answer would have been to stop and untick Is Available instead.

Common Mistakes

  • Deleting instead of deactivating. The single most common regret. Once the record is gone, the history that referenced it is harder to read and impossible to rebuild.
  • Fighting the in-use error. It is telling you something real. Read what it names and clear that, rather than hunting for a way to force the delete.
  • Repointing routings but forgetting the schedules. Both count as references. So do overrides.
  • Assuming the plan updates itself. It does not. Reschedule.
  • Losing capacity by accident. Removing a machine removes its hours. If the work still has to happen, the replacement absorbs the load and dates move out. Check the replacement's utilization before you promise anything.

Q: We sold an old lathe. It is on twelve routings and years of finished jobs. Delete it or not?

A: Do not delete it. Untick Is Available so the scheduler stops booking it, and leave the record alone. Those years of finished jobs reference the work center for their hours, costs, and actuals, and deleting it would mean unpicking all of that first. Then work through the twelve routings and repoint each step at the machine that now does the work, which is the part that actually matters. Once no routing uses it, the deactivated record sits harmlessly in the grid as the reason your 2024 cost history makes sense.

Q: I created three test work centers during setup and want them gone before we go live. The delete keeps failing on one of them.

A: That one has a reference the other two do not. Work through them in order: first check whether any routing step still points at it, since a test routing you forgot is the usual culprit; then check whether any job was scheduled on it during your trial runs, because a schedule row counts as a reference; then open its per-day capacity dialog and reset any override you typed while experimenting. Clear all three and the delete completes. If you would rather not chase it, deactivating the test work center has the same practical effect on the plan.
