My Bottleneck Flag Did Nothing Without a Target Date: Why, and the Fix

You marked a work center as the bottleneck (the oven, the plating line, the five-axis cell), expecting the schedule to reorganize around it: upstream steps pulled in to feed it, downstream steps following it, the constraint protected. Instead nothing changed. The jobs schedule the same front-to-back way they did before. The flag is on, and it appears to have done nothing.

The bottleneck flag and the target date do two different jobs, and the anchor behavior needs both.
- The flag identifies the constraint. Setting a work center as the bottleneck tells the scheduler which step is the constraint and that the job should be built around that step rather than purely forward.
- The target date is the pivot. Anchor scheduling places the constraint step on the job's target date, then schedules the steps before it backward so they finish in time to feed it, and the steps after it forward. That backward-and-forward split needs a date to pivot on.
- No target date means no pivot. With the flag on but no target date on the job, there is nothing for the backward pass to build from, so the scheduler falls to normal forward scheduling. The flag has marked the constraint, but the job is placed as if it were not anchored.
A due date is not the same thing. A due date is the finish commitment; anchor scheduling pivots on a target start or target end date for the constraint. A job with a due date but no target date still schedules forward.
