To add a new product in EDGEBIC by User Solutions, open the Product tab, click Add Product, enter a Product Id, and click Save. That is the whole required path. The Product Configuration dialog carries a dozen more fields, but only the Id is mandatory, and the product appears in every dropdown in the application the moment you save. This post covers the single task of creating the record. For the full field-by-field tour, read how to set up products in EDGEBIC.

Before you start

  • You are signed in and can see the Product tab on the main navigation.
  • You have permission to add products. The Add Product button is permission-gated, so ask your administrator if it is missing.
  • Optional but useful: the unit of measure and the category you intend to assign already exist. Both can also be created on the fly from the product form.
  • Decide the identifier before you open the dialog. Renaming later is possible but touches routings and scheduled jobs.

Steps

  1. Open the Product tab from the main navigation. The Product Management page opens with the grid grouped by category.
  2. Click Add Product at the top right. The Product Configuration dialog opens with the heading Add Product.
  3. Enter the Product Id. This is the required field and the name planners will read everywhere: on the routing, on the manufacturing order, on the quote, and on the Gantt. Keep it short and readable, such as Widget-A or Frame-S.
  4. Leave Product Name to auto-generate, or overtype it with your formal part number. This secondary name must be unique across products.
  5. Pick the Unit of Measure from the dropdown. It reads "select unit" until you choose one.
  6. Enter Sale Price if you sell the item, and Rollup Cost if you quote it. These two feed quote totals and margin, so a quoted product with blank values produces a misleading margin figure.
  7. Enter Lead Time in calendar days if the item needs a finishing window after the last operation, such as packing or paint curing. Leave it at zero when there is no post-production tail. See how to change a product's lead time for what that number actually does to a job's end date.
  8. Assign a Category. Click New beside the dropdown to create one without leaving the form, or set it up in advance using how to create a product category.
  9. Fill the descriptive fields you care about: Size, Description, Weight, Country of Origin, and an optional Icon/Image picked with Browse.
  10. Click Save. The dialog closes and the row appears in the grid.

What changes when you save

The product record exists and is immediately selectable. Product dropdowns across the application refresh without a restart or a manual reload, which includes the manufacturing order dialog, the quote dialog, and the routing module's product palette.

Nothing else moves. No capacity is booked, no job is created, and no existing schedule is touched. The new row appears in the grid with a circle marker beside its identifier and No BOR in the BOR column, which is the expected state for a product whose routing has not been built yet.

SurfaceEffect of saving a new product
Product dropdowns (orders, quotes, routing module)Available at once, no refresh needed
Product gridNew row, grouped under its category, marked No BOR
QuotesThe product becomes quotable once it has a routing and costs
The scheduleNothing moves. Product records never trigger a reschedule

How to check it worked

  1. Find the new row in the Product grid. Type a fragment of the Id into the search panel above the columns if the catalog is long.
  2. Confirm the BOR column reads No BOR and the marker beside the identifier is a circle. That is correct for a brand-new product and tells you the next task is the routing.
  3. Open the manufacturing order dialog and confirm the product appears in its dropdown. If it does not, the save did not complete.
  4. If you entered a Sale Price below the Rollup Cost, expect the warning "Unit price is less than unit cost. You may be selling at a loss." It does not block the save, but it is worth confirming both numbers are right.

Common mistakes

Leaving Product Id blank or too short. The dialog rejects the save with "Product id is required." The Id needs at least two characters.

Reusing a Product Name. The secondary name is enforced unique through the form. If you see "is already in use" under Product Name, choose a different value or clear it and let the auto-generated one stand.

Treating the new product as ready to order. A product with no routing cannot be scheduled. The grid's BOR column is the fastest place to spot the gap, and you can group the whole catalog by routing readiness with a single click on that column. See how to find which products have no routing.

Padding Lead Time to buy safety. Lead time is meant for genuine post-production time. Inflating it hides capacity problems in master data and makes every promise date later than it needs to be.

Every scheduling task in EDGEBIC has a short recipe like this one. Browse them all in the EDGEBIC how-to library, and see how product data fits the wider platform on the EDGEBIC product page.

Expert Q&A: Deep Dive

Q: We add roughly five new parts a week. Is typing them one at a time reasonable, or should everything go through import?

A: Five a week is comfortably inside typing range. The dialog takes under a minute once you know the fields, and typing gives you a chance to set category, lead time, and cost while the part is fresh in mind. Switch to import when a batch crosses roughly twenty items, or any time you are updating a field across the existing catalog, because a plant-wide price revision as one file beats 200 dialogs. Mixed practice is normal: import the migration, type the trickle.

Q: A new product was created but planners say it will not schedule. What is missing?

A: Almost always the routing. The product grid's BOR column tells you directly: a new product reads No BOR and carries a circle marker beside its identifier, and a product with no routing has no operations for the scheduler to place. Build the routing, confirm the cell flips to Active BOR and the marker becomes a checkmark, then create the manufacturing order. If the cell instead reads a red multi-BOR legacy warning, the product resolves to more than one routing and needs consolidating before it will schedule predictably.
