What a Status Call Costs Today
The customer asks a simple question. Here is the path it takes in a plant without a progress record:
- The rep does not know, and says they will check.
- The rep calls or walks to the supervisor.
- The supervisor does not know precisely and goes to look.
- An operator is interrupted mid-setup to confirm.
- The supervisor reports back.
- The rep calls the customer a second time.

Job Progress is the workhorse and it carries one rule worth knowing before you quote it to a customer: a job reads Completed only when every operation step has an actual end date. Marking one early step complete does not flip the job, and the finish date stays empty until the last step is done.
Percent complete is hours-first, actual hours divided by planned hours, falling back to pieces only when no hours exist. That keeps the number honest. A job showing 92 percent with one operation untouched is genuinely not finished, and a system that rounded it to done would be setting up a conversation nobody wants to have on the ship date.
From "Where Is It" to "Why, and When"
The better version of the call answers the follow-up before it is asked. Four lookups get you there:

Three and a half hours a week of supervisor and operator time is the visible saving, and it is real. The larger one is the halving of customer contacts, because the second call is where a routine question turns into an anxious one. Who Should Be Reading It
The change that makes this stick is not the report, it is who has access to it. If only the planner can open the progress reports, every status question still routes through one person and you have moved the bottleneck rather than removed it.

What the Reports Cannot Tell a Customer

They are point-in-time. Every report queries fresh when you open it and caches nothing, which means it is accurate at the moment you read it and says nothing about the next hour. When a report drives a commitment, export it so the promise keeps its arithmetic.
Percent complete is not percent of the way to the door. It measures hours against the plan for the operations on the job. Packing, inspection outside the routing, and shipping lead time are separate, and a customer hearing 95 percent will assume otherwise unless you say so.
A forecast late is not a promise broken. On-Time Delivery judges finished jobs by their actual end and unfinished jobs by their scheduled end, which makes it an early-warning list as well as a scorecard.
