- What Is Job Status in Manufacturing Scheduling?
Job status is the top-level state of a manufacturing order, from Scheduled through In Progress to Completed, that tells a planner at a glance where the work stands right now. It is the single field a planner reads to sort the shop into "not started," "running," and "done," plus the exceptions that need attention.

How it works
Job status is stored on the manufacturing order and advances as real events happen. The core progression is three states. A job is Scheduled when a capacity plan exists but no work has started. It becomes In Progress when at least one routing step records an actual start date. It reaches Completed when all steps are finished and the final step has an actual end date.
Around that spine sit the exceptions. Delayed means the scheduled end is in the past but the order is not complete. On Hold means a planner has paused the work. Cancelled means the order will not be scheduled further. And Satisfied From Stock means the demand was met entirely from on-hand finished goods, so no operations were planned and only an inventory issue was posted.
The status is not a label a planner types by hand for the running states; it follows the actuals. Logging a start moves a job to In Progress, and completing the last step moves it to Completed. That link to real events is what makes the status trustworthy on a busy floor.
A concrete example
Think of an order at a print shop. It sits in the queue as accepted work (Scheduled). The press operator loads the plates and starts the run, and the ticket flips to "on the press" (In Progress). When the last copies come off and the job is boxed, the ticket reads "done" (Completed). If the promised pickup time passes and the job still is not boxed, the counter flags it as late (Delayed) so someone chases it.
Now suppose the customer wanted 500 flyers and the shop already had 500 identical ones on the shelf from an overrun. Nobody runs the press; the shop pulls the stock, marks the ticket "filled from inventory" (Satisfied From Stock), and the demand is met without booking any press time.

The exception statuses do real planning work. Delayed draws your eye to the orders whose plan has slipped past its due date, which is where triage should start. On Hold keeps a paused order out of active scheduling without deleting it. Satisfied From Stock closes the loop with inventory, so demand covered from the shelf does not book phantom capacity.
Because status follows logged reality, it stays in step with the actuals workflow and the audit trail. Q: Half my orders show Scheduled and half show In Progress. What is the practical difference for planning?
A: A Scheduled job is still fully movable, because it has a plan but no logged work, so a reschedule can freely change its timing and machines. An In Progress job has actuals on at least one step, and those completed portions are preserved, so a reschedule only replans the remaining steps from where the shop actually stands. In practice, treat Scheduled jobs as flexible and In Progress jobs as partly committed: you can still improve their future, but their history is locked in and will not be shuffled.
Q: A job's scheduled end passed yesterday but it is not finished. What status will I see and what should I do?
A: You will see Delayed, which flags that the planned end date is in the past while the order is still not complete. That is your cue to act rather than a system error. Open the job, confirm what has actually been logged, and reschedule the remaining steps so the plan reflects reality and produces a realistic new completion date. Delayed is meant to draw your eye to the exact orders that have slipped, so you can triage the few that matter instead of re-checking everything.
