- What Is a Unit of Measure in Manufacturing?
A unit of measure is the standard quantity label attached to a product, such as each, kilogram, meter, or hour, so that every quantity on an order, a routing, or an inventory balance is counted the same way. It is the small but load-bearing agreement that a figure like 100 means the same thing on every screen. Get it right once, and the rest of the planning math stays honest.

How it works
A unit of measure is a simple lookup entry: a name (pieces, kilograms, meters, hours), a short symbol (pcs, kg, m, hrs), and an optional conversion factor. Every product points at one of these entries, and from then on the product's quantities carry that unit everywhere they travel.
The value is consistency. When a manufacturing order asks for 100 units of a product, the scheduler multiplies the hours required per unit on each routing step by that 100. The answer is only correct if the 100 and the per-unit figure both speak the product's own unit. The same shared unit keeps inventory receipts, issues, and on-hand balances readable, and it keeps a sales order line's quantity meaning exactly what the customer ordered.
The conversion factor handles the less common case where you need to relate one unit to another, such as a dozen holding 12 or a kilogram holding 1000 grams. Most products use a single base unit and never touch the factor. It exists for the shop that buys in one unit and consumes in another.
A concrete example
Think of the dropdown that lets you pick kg or lbs when you enter a material weight. Picking the wrong one does not just mislabel the number, it changes what the number means.
Take a plant that makes brackets. The finished bracket is measured in each. The steel plate it is cut from is measured in kilograms. The milling work center is measured in hours. An order for 500 brackets drives 500 through the bracket routing: if a milling step needs 0.1 hours per bracket, that is 50 hours of milling. The material step consumes kilograms of steel per bracket, counted entirely in kilograms, never in pieces. Three different units, three different dimensions, and none of them collide, because each product and each work center owns its own unit.
Now imagine the steel had been entered in each by mistake. The material step would try to consume pieces of a raw material sold by weight, and every downstream requirement calculation would be wrong by whatever the real weight-per-piece happened to be. The unit is the guardrail that stops that error before it starts.

A: Set the finished product's unit to whatever you sell and count it in, then let the work center capacity type carry the time dimension. If you sell by the case, the product unit is case, and an order for 50 cases drives 50 through the routing. A packing work center measured in pieces can still count individual units per hour, and a conversion factor of 24 on a case unit lets the system relate a case to the 24 units inside it when you need both views.
