A skill in manufacturing scheduling is a named certification or capability, such as TIG-Inconel or CMM Inspection, that a routing step can require so the scheduler only staffs the step when a qualified operator is available. How a Skill Works

A skill lives in a catalog as a named capability. On its own it does nothing; it becomes a constraint the moment a routing step declares it as its required skill. That declaration is the whole mechanism. The engine now models two resources for that step, not one: the machine is the primary resource, and a qualified human is the second resource that must also be free at the same time.

When the scheduler considers a window for a skilled step, it checks the machine's capacity as always, then checks whether any operator who is certified for the required skill, rostered on that shift, and not on time off, has hours still available. If both conditions hold, the step can run; if the qualified pool is exhausted for that window, the step waits for the next window where a certified operator has room.

Skills are the reason a plant with plenty of machine hours can still be short on capacity. Steel does not care who runs the press, but an Inconel weld does care who holds the torch, and a skill is how EDGEBIC encodes that difference.

Take a plant with three TIG welders. Two are certified for mild steel only; one, Joe, also holds the Inconel certificate. Without a skill, the engine sees a Welding work center with three interchangeable people and will happily schedule three Inconel jobs to run Monday.

Now create a skill called TIG-Inconel, certify Joe against it, and set it as the required skill on the Inconel welding routing steps. On the next scheduling run the engine treats those steps as needing Joe or another Inconel-certified welder. Since Joe is the only one, the three Inconel jobs cannot all run Monday: there is only one Joe, so two of them move to the next windows where he has free hours. The mild-steel jobs, whose steps carry no required skill, keep flowing across all three welders exactly as before.

That is the framed welding certificate on the wall, turned into a schedulable constraint. The plan now reflects who is actually allowed to do the work, not just how many machines exist.

How EDGEBIC Uses It

A skill is master data you maintain in the skill catalog, and it is referenced by a routing step's required-skill field. Several product behaviors flow from that single link:
