Without any operator data, both jobs schedule Monday 08:00 to 16:00 in parallel, one on each cell. Two machines, one welder, at the same time: that is the fiction the labor constraint exists to kill.

Step 1: Set Up the Operator and the Skill

Open Daily Hours and switch to the Operators tab. Add the skill to the catalog: TIG-Inconel. Select Joe, open his Skills sub-tab, and add a certification for TIG-Inconel, optionally with an expiry date. Then open his Roster sub-tab and tick the Day Shift cells for Monday through Friday.

Two rules are worth knowing. An expired certification drops out of the engine on the next run, so currency is enforced automatically. And the roster is a weekly pattern keyed to the shift, not a pile of per-date rows, so you roster Joe once and record his absences separately as exceptions.

Step 2: Gate the Steps

Open each job's routing step. Set the Required Skill to TIG-Inconel. Set the Operator attention (the attend fraction) to 1.0, meaning fully attended: one operator-hour per machine-hour. Both weld steps now carry the constraint.

Step 3: Schedule and Watch the Second Job Slide

Run Drive Schedule. The engine holds a per-run operator-hours ledger keyed by operator, date, and shift, and consults it at four points: it will not offer an unstaffed shift, it gates each candidate window on operator availability, it clamps how many hours a window can take to what the pool affords, and it books the hours as each slice commits.

  • J-100 schedules first. Monday Day Shift pool for TIG-Inconel is 8 hours minus 0 booked, or 8. The machine needs 8, the pool affords 8, so J-100 runs Weld-A Monday 08:00 to 16:00. The engine books Joe: his Monday ledger goes to 8 hours.
  • J-200 is next. Monday Day Shift pool is now 8 minus 8, or 0. The engine never even offers Monday; the diagnostics record that the window was skipped for lack of qualified operator hours. The day walk continues, Tuesday's pool is 8, and J-200 runs Weld-B Tuesday 08:00 to 16:00, with Joe booked Tuesday.

Two jobs, one welder, two days. Exactly how a supervisor would staff it, and no schedule that claims Joe is in two cells at once.

Step 4: Add a Second Welder

The fix a planner would reach for is a second certified person. Add Mia to the Operators tab, certify her for TIG-Inconel, and roster her Mondays. Reschedule. Now the Monday pool is 16 hours (Joe plus Mia), both jobs run Monday, Joe on one cell and Mia on the other. The constraint did not slow anything down; it made the schedule match the real staffing.

The Attend Fraction, in One Table

Not every machine needs a person for its whole run. The attend fraction scales the run phase's operator cost:

Setup always books one operator regardless of the fraction, because a machine still needs a person to set up. So a step with setup can never start on an unstaffed day even at fraction 0.0, which keeps an unstaffable skill failing visibly instead of silently. A Variation: Pin the Job to Joe

Suppose the step must be Joe's, not just anyone certified. Open the step and pin the Operator to Joe, which is enabled only once a required skill is set. The qualified pool narrows to exactly Joe; the rest is never a fallback.

Now record time off for Joe, Monday through Wednesday, on his Time-off sub-tab (the range is inclusive on both ends). Reschedule. With Mia certified but not pinned, the unpinned step would run Monday on Mia. But the pin removes Mia from the pool, so Monday through Wednesday show zero available hours and the step slides to Thursday, Joe's first day back. The slip is visible on the Gantt, which is exactly the point: a named person's absence should surface as schedule movement, never as a silent substitution nobody approved.

What This Walkthrough Proves

  1. Operators are a finite second resource. A required skill gates a step on a per-day operator-hours ledger, on top of the machine calendar.
