How to Mark a Product as Non-Inventory in EDGEBIC

To mark a product as non-inventory in EDGEBIC by User Solutions, open the product, uncheck Is Stocked, and save. Clearing that flag tells the planner to skip ledger posting, netting, and replenishment for the product, which is what a service item or overhead SKU needs. The product drops out of the inventory matrix, and the scheduler stops posting receipts and issues for its manufacturing orders. This is a permanent configuration choice, not a temporary hold.

This is one product setting. To change how a stocked product is built instead, see how to switch a product between make to stock and make to order. The full task set is on the EDGEBIC how-to hub.

Before You Start

  • The product exists. The flag is a field on the product record.
  • Confidence that the item genuinely never holds stock, since this is a permanent setting.
  • If the product is make-to-stock, a plan to change its build method too, because the two settings cannot both be true.

Step by Step

  1. Open the Products tab and edit the product.
  2. Find the Is Stocked checkbox in the inventory planning area.
  3. Uncheck Is Stocked.
  4. Click Save.

What Changes When You Save

With Is Stocked off, the projection and netting engine skip the product entirely. It no longer appears in the inventory matrix, and the scheduler no longer posts ledger receipts or issues for its manufacturing orders. Replenishment suggestions stop for it as well, because there is no balance to replenish. The product remains active and can still appear on routings and jobs, so this affects inventory handling only, not whether the item can be used.

If the product is also set to make-to-stock, EDGEBIC flags the combination with an anomaly check, because a make-to-stock item is supposed to post finished-goods receipts to a balance it no longer keeps. Resolve the contradiction before relying on the setting.

How to Check It Worked

Open the inventory calendar or matrix and confirm the product no longer appears as a stocked row. Schedule and complete one of its jobs, then check that no receipt or issue was posted to a ledger for the item. If the item still shows up in the matrix, confirm the flag saved on the correct product. If an anomaly is flagged, check whether the product is still set to make-to-stock and adjust the build method.

Common Mistakes

  • Using it as a temporary hold. This is a permanent flag. To pause a product's jobs, deactivate it or hold its orders instead.
  • Leaving make-to-stock on. A make-to-stock, non-inventory product is contradictory and gets flagged. Change the build method too.
  • Expecting history to vanish. Turning the flag off later restores historical entries to the running balance, so records are preserved.
  • Confusing it with deactivation. Non-inventory keeps the item usable but unstocked. Deactivation retires the item from new use.

Next Steps

To retire an item that is no longer used at all, read how to deactivate a product without losing history. To confirm posting behavior for stocked items, see how to audit the inventory ledger for a part. The platform overview is at EDGEBIC, and more recipes are in the EDGEBIC how-to hub.

Expert Q&A: Deep Dive

Q: We have an outside plating service that appears as a routing step but we never hold it in stock. Every plan keeps trying to net and replenish it. How do I stop that?

A: Open that item and uncheck Is Stocked, then save. With the stocked flag off, EDGEBIC skips ledger posting, netting, and replenishment for it, so it stops appearing in the inventory matrix and the scheduler no longer tries to manage stock for it. The item stays usable on routings and jobs. Just be aware this is a permanent setting rather than a temporary pause, so only clear it for items that genuinely never hold stock.

Q: I turned off Is Stocked on a make-to-stock product and now something is flagging it. Why?

A: A product cannot be both make-to-stock and non-inventory, because a make-to-stock item is meant to post finished-goods receipts to a balance it no longer has. That contradiction is exactly what the anomaly check catches. Decide which is true: if the item really is not stocked, change its build method away from make-to-stock, and if it genuinely builds to stock, turn Is Stocked back on. Clearing the flag is only correct for items that do not hold inventory at all.
