The instinct is to look for a holiday tab on the shift record. There isn't one. EDGEBIC's scheduling engine understands closures at three scopes, plant, shift, and machine, but only the plant scope has a screen in the current release. Anything narrower is expressed with overrides, and this page covers the shift case.

Before You Start

  • You know which shift is off and on which date.
  • You know this is not a plant holiday. A plant holiday would close every shift, which is a different and much blunter tool.
  • You know which work centers run that shift. You will enter one override per work center, so it helps to have the list.
  • You can rerun the scheduler so existing plans reflect the closure.

Step 1: Open the Work Center's Per-Day Capacity

Open the Workcenter tab. On a work center that runs the shift you are closing, click the per-day capacity button on its row. The alternate route is Schedule > Resource Calendar, where you can double-click a date cell on that work center's Total Capacity row.

Step 2: Select the Shift You Are Closing

Pick the shift in Shift:. This is the field that makes the closure shift-specific rather than whole-day, and it is the one people skip. An override entered while the wrong shift is selected reduces capacity somewhere you were not looking, and the crew you meant to send home stays scheduled.

Step 3: Zero the Date

Adjust the From: and To: range so the date is visible, find its row, and type 0 in the Capacity (h) column. The change saves as you edit and the Overridden column ticks.

Add a Reason. Something a stranger can read six months later: Festival day, night crew off. This is the field that makes the closed day explain itself, and it is genuinely better documentation than a closure record with just a name.

Step 4: Repeat for Every Work Center on That Shift

The override closes one work center's shift, so a plant with six machines running nights needs six entries. Work down the list.

This is the honest cost of the current release: a single shift-level closure record would be one entry, and it does not exist yet. If the closure applies to the entire plant anyway, a plant holiday is one entry and the right choice. Overrides are for when genuinely one crew is off and the others are working.

Step 5: Reschedule

Run Schedule / Re-Schedule so any work that was planned for that shift on that date moves to available capacity. Entering the zeros changes the calendar but does not move existing bars on its own.

How to Check It Worked

  1. Reopen each work center's per-day capacity view and confirm the Overridden tick on the right date, with the right shift selected.
  2. Switch Shift: to the crew that is still working and confirm it shows normal capacity on that date.
  3. Count your overrides against your list of machines that run the shift. A missed machine is the failure mode here, and it is silent.
  4. Rerun the scheduler and confirm night work that was planned for that date has moved off the closed shift.

Common Mistakes

Using a plant holiday by accident. A plant holiday closes every shift and every work center. If you only mean one crew, the override route is what gives you the narrower reach.

Overriding one machine and assuming the shift is closed. Overrides are per work center. The rest of the machines keep running that shift until you zero them too.

Selecting the wrong shift. The override lands on whichever shift is selected in the dialog. On a two-shift machine, closing the wrong one leaves the crew you meant to send home fully scheduled.

Forgetting to rerun. The capacity view shows zero, but existing bars stay put until a reschedule moves them.

Never resetting. An override outlives the holiday. Clear it when the crew is back or you have built yourself a permanent hole.
