Before You Start

  • Actuals are being logged. Percent complete is built from logged hours, so an unlogged shop shows every job barely started.
  • Jobs are scheduled. Progress is measured against the plan.
  • You know the job number if you are drilling into one order, though the status board works without it.

Step 1: Open Job Progress for the Status Board

Open Reports and click Job Progress in the Operational group. No date range is requested, because the report is a snapshot of every job as it stands right now.

Each row is one job: quantity required against quantity actually made, an early or late delta, percent complete, a status label, and a daily pieces track. The grid sorts by due date, so the jobs due soonest sit at the top.

Two subtleties are worth knowing. Percent complete is hours-based first, actual hours over planned hours, and falls back to pieces only when no hours exist. And a job reads as completed only when every operation is finished, which is why a half-done job carries a percentage but no finish date.

Step 2: Read the Two Delta Columns Correctly

Job Progress carries a potential and an actual lateness figure, and they mean different things.

  • The potential early-or-late delta is the projected finish against the due date. It is a forecast, live while the job runs, and a positive projection means you still have time to act.
  • The actual early-or-late delta is populated only after the job completes. It is a fact: the job finished that many days early or late.

Reading a forecast as a fact is the classic misstep. A job projected three days late that has not started can still be pulled on-time; a job that finished three days late cannot.

Step 3: Use the Daily Pieces Track

The pieces track is a compact per-day record of what the job produced. Read the shape, not just the last number. A track that climbs steadily is a healthy job. A track that flat-lines mid-week tells you production stopped, and it carries the date it stopped, which is more actionable than the percentage alone.

Step 4: Drill With Work Center Progress

When Job Progress says a job is 60% done and you need to know which 40% is missing, open Work Center Progress in the Operational group and filter it to the job number.

It returns one row per operation step in sequence order, each carrying net required hours, scheduled and actual start and end, pieces made, percent complete, and, if the step was re-routed, the work center it was moved from. Scan for the step whose actual hours fall well short of its required hours and whose dates have stopped moving. That is the blocker: one operation on one station, not a vague shortfall across the whole job.

Step 5: Follow the Blocker to Its Station

Once Work Center Progress names the stalled step, you have a station. Take it into the work center utilization report and check whether it is running above 100% for the window with your job queued behind others. A stalled step is far more often a capacity queue than an idle machine, and the utilization report tells the two apart.

What Changes When You Run Them

Nothing. Both reports are read-only and query fresh each time.

The fix happens elsewhere: resequencing a station, adding capacity for a day, moving an operation to an alternate work center, or re-running the scheduler. Completed steps are never moved by a reschedule, so a fix lands only on the work that remains.

How to Check It Worked

Re-open Job Progress after the work moves. Percent complete on the job should rise, and the daily pieces track should start climbing again from the day work resumes. If the track is still flat, the blocker has not actually cleared, and Work Center Progress will show the same stalled step. A resolved blocker shows up as movement on both reports, not just on the headline percentage.

Common Mistakes

  • Reading the potential delta as a delivered fact. One is a live forecast, the other a completed result. Only the actual delta records what happened.
  • Expecting a finish date on a running job. A job reads completed only when every step is done. No finish date on a job in progress is correct.
  • Stopping at the job-level percentage. Sixty percent complete does not name the blocker. Work Center Progress does.
  • Trusting progress on an unlogged shop. Percent complete depends on logged hours. Without them, every job looks barely started regardless of reality.
